If you’re raising a high school athlete in Southeast Missouri, you already know the squeeze: high school ball, a second sport, school activities, family time — and a club calendar that somehow collides with all of it. For years, that’s been the trade-off families thought they had to accept. Heading into the 2026–27 season, NSSC Volleyball Club is changing that. We’ve redesigned our high school club volleyball program around one belief we’ve held since day one: there should be a fit for everyone, and no kid should have to choose between volleyball and the rest of her life.
Here’s what’s changing, why we did it, and what it means for your family.

A Fit for Every Athlete
This is the heart of the redesign. From developmental players to college hopefuls, the new structure meets athletes where they are and coaches them forward. We’ve never believed opportunity should be reserved only for “elite” players — and this season’s setup makes that more true than ever. Whether your daughter wants a high-level national path or a competitive spot closer to home, there’s a place for her here.
We field a minimum of three competitive levels for our high school athletes — Nike National, Black Regional, and White Local — so every player can compete at the level that fits her goals and her schedule. Here’s the projected high school lineup for 2026–27:
- Nike National: 17/18 · 15/16
- Black Regional: 17/18 · 15/16
- White Local: 18 · 17 · 16 · 15
The National teams combine age groups for a focused, high-level path; the Regional teams give serious players targeted exposure; and the Local teams keep competition close to home with the lightest travel load. That range is exactly how we make room for every athlete who wants to grow, compete, and rise.
When you register, choose the highest level your athlete would like to try out for based on the commitment that fits your family. If she doesn’t make her preferred level, she may be placed on a lower level where applicable.

Three Levels. A Fit for Every Athlete.
Pick the highest level your athlete wants to try out for based on the commitment that fits your family. Here’s what each level plays and when the season wraps.
Nike National
Our highest-level path for athletes serious about college-pathway play — national qualifiers, metro tournaments, and elite coaching.
Black Regional
High-level competitive play on a regional schedule with one qualifier — a real college track without the full Nike commitment.
White Local
Local-focused competitive teams for first-year club athletes or families who want growth without heavy travel weekends.
Why We’re Making These Changes
For more than two decades, we’ve coached in this region and watched talented athletes get stretched thin. The conflicts always pile up in the same places — spring sports, school commitments, and a club season that drags weekend after weekend well past March.
“We’ve coached in this region a long time, and we know exactly where the conflicts pile up,” said Carl and Kacie, NSSC Club Directors. “So we built a structure with a fit for everyone — one that lets athletes compete at a high level without forcing them to give up everything else they love. The opportunity is there for the players who want it, and it never costs a kid their shot at playing in college.”
We live and coach in this geography. We know what the families here are juggling. This structure is our answer to it.
What’s Changing for High School Teams
Combined Nike National Teams
We’re bringing our 17s and 18s together into a single 17/18 Nike National team, and our 15s and 16s together into a 15/16 Nike National team. This is our highest-level path: 2–3 qualifiers, St. Louis Metro tournaments, and a couple of local tournaments. Athletes on a Nike roster commit to being present at all qualifiers.
The biggest change is for the 17/18 Nike National team: its season is built to wrap up in March, so it doesn’t collide with prom, spring sports, and the other commitments that fill an upperclassman’s spring. The one exception is USAV Nationals — if the team earns its place there, the season continues to that event. Our 15/16 Nike National team plays a full season through May, just as it did this year.

A Step Up for Black Regional Athletes
Our 17/18 and 15/16 Black Regional teams are for strong, motivated players who still want to be seen on a bigger stage. These teams play one national qualifier, a couple of St. Louis Metro tournaments, and local tournaments, with the season ending in late March. It’s real exposure without the heavy, all-spring travel that some families opt out of. Because Black Regional still attends a qualifier, an athlete can stay on a college recruiting track without going all-in on the full Nike National schedule — a real option for families who love the goal but feel the Nike commitment is too much. The opportunity is there if you want it, and if it’s not a fit for your athlete, it doesn’t hold her back one bit.
White Local: High-Level, Close to Home
Our single-age White Local teams — 18, 17, 16, and 15 — focus on local tournaments, with the season ending in mid-March. They keep competition strong and travel light, built around home and our region. It’s a real, competitive spot for athletes who want to keep growing without the road life. From first-year players to seniors, every level is coached with the same goal: meet the athlete where she is and move her forward.

You Don’t Have to Choose
This is the promise underneath every change: come to NSSC, and you don’t have to choose between club volleyball and everything else your athlete loves. Here’s how the new structure delivers that:
- You’ll know your schedule. Qualifier dates are set well in advance, so families can plan around them instead of bracing for surprise conflicts.
- Your upperclassmen’s spring is protected. The 17/18 Nike National season is built to wrap in March so it doesn’t collide with prom, spring sports, and graduation-year commitments — with USAV Nationals as the only exception in April.
- There’s a path to college at more than one level. If the full Nike schedule is too much, Black Regional still attends a qualifier and keeps athletes on a recruiting track.
- You don’t have to play 24/7 to get recruited. You have to be in the right rooms at the right moments — and we’ve built the calendar around exactly that.
That’s the whole idea. Compete hard, stay seen, and still have a life. Those things were never supposed to be at odds.
New This Year: Nike Rosters Picked at July Tryouts
Here’s a change we’re especially excited about. For the first time, we’ll select and announce our Nike National rosters right at tryouts in July — rather than waiting until practices begin in November to set those teams, the way we have in years past. That means athletes and families will know where they stand far earlier, with the clarity to plan the season from the start.
We’ll make offers for those roster spots at tryouts. For some teams — particularly our younger groups, who have a full high school season still ahead of them — we may keep a few spots open through a development window into the fall. That gives athletes additional time to grow and earn their place so we can find the best fit for each role. It’s our development-first philosophy at work: we’d rather coach a player up than rush a decision or turn her away.
Tryout registration at NSSC is expected to open June 22. Families can find dates, details, and registration at nsscvolleyball.com/tryouts/.
Updated Commitment Timeline for Families
One important heads-up: the Gateway Region has implemented a new commitment policy for this summer, and we want every family aware of it before tryouts. Here’s the short version:
- Commitment night moves to 1:00 PM on Sunday. After 1:00 PM Sunday, offers made on Friday and Saturday may be voided.
- Open-roster and makeup tryouts begin at 1:00 PM Sunday for players who are alternates or have not yet committed to a club or team.
- The commitment deadline for open-roster tryouts is 7:00 PM Sunday, after which offers made during that window may be rescinded.
- For tryouts held after the initial tryout weekend, a commitment may be requested at the time of the tryout.
Full details will be shared directly with tryout participants, so if your athlete is trying out, watch for that communication. You can learn more about how regional play works through USA Volleyball.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does playing high school club volleyball at NSSC mean giving up other sports?
A: No — preventing that is the whole point of this redesign. The opportunity to do more is there for players who want it, but it’s never all-or-nothing.
Q: Will this still help my daughter get recruited for college?
A: Yes. The path to college volleyball stays fully intact at more than one level. The Nike National teams and the Black Regional teams both attend qualifiers that keep serious players visible to college coaches — so even families who find the full Nike schedule too much can stay on a real recruiting track through Black Regional.
Q: When are tryouts and how do I register?
A: Rosters are built at tryouts in July, and registration is expected to open June 22. Dates, details, and sign-up are all at nsscvolleyball.com/tryouts.
Q: When will we know if my daughter made the Nike National team?
A: This year, for the first time, we’ll select and announce Nike National rosters right at July tryouts instead of waiting until November practices. A few spots — especially on younger teams — may stay open through a fall development window so athletes have time to grow, but families will have much earlier clarity than in the past.
Q: What are NSSC’s team levels?
A: For high school athletes we field three competitive levels — Nike National, Black Regional, and White Local. The National teams (17/18 and 15/16) combine age groups for a high-level path, the Regional teams (17/18 and 15/16) offer targeted national exposure, and the Local teams (18, 17, 16, 15) keep strong competition close to home.
Every Athlete Deserves a Place to Rise
This redesign comes down to a simple promise: there’s a fit for everyone, and your athlete shouldn’t have to trade away everything else she loves to compete at a high level. We’ve built a high school structure that respects your family’s time, protects your daughter’s college opportunities, and gives every serious player a real place to grow.
Other clubs turn kids away. We give them a place to rise. If you want your athlete to be part of the NSSC Family this season, mark your calendar for tryout registration on June 22 and visit nsscvolleyball.com/tryouts for all the details.
