Why a 2-Hour Tryout Doesn’t Tell the Full Story — And How We’re Changing the Game at NSSC

June 9, 2026

Let’s be honest — two hours is not long enough to truly evaluate an athlete during club volleyball tryouts. 🏐

At NSSC, we see the heart, hustle, and work ethic your athlete pours into the game. A quick serve in a high-pressure window doesn’t capture all of that — and as coaches who genuinely care about finding each player the right fit, we’ve never believed it should.

That belief still shapes how we run tryouts. But for the 2026–27 season, we’ve made one big change that gives families more clarity than ever — while staying true to our development-first approach. Here’s how high school tryouts work this year. 👇

Understanding the significance of time during club volleyball tryouts is essential for proper evaluation.

What’s New for 2026–27: Nike Rosters Are Set at July Tryouts

Here’s the headline: for the first time, we’ll select and announce our Nike National rosters right at July tryouts — instead of waiting until November practices to set those teams, the way we have in past seasons. If your athlete is trying out for a Nike National team, you’ll know where she stands far earlier, with the clarity to plan the season from the start.

What hasn’t changed is the belief behind everything we do at tryouts: a single two-hour window doesn’t tell the whole story. So while Nike rosters are set in July, our Black Regional and White Local teams aren’t necessarily locked that day — and that’s on purpose.

Why a 2-Hour Tryout Still Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

Athletes grow. We’ve watched players transform between July tryouts and the fall — through their high school season, through reps, through coaching. Locking every roster on day one would mean judging a kid on her first-day nerves instead of her real ceiling. 🏫📈

That’s why, beyond the Nike National teams, we keep a development window open. For some teams — especially our younger groups, who have a full high school season still ahead — we may hold a few spots open into the fall so athletes have time to grow and earn their place. We’d rather coach a player up than rush a decision or turn her away.

The Three Levels Your Athlete Is Trying Out For

For 2026–27, our high school program runs on three levels:

  • Nike National — our highest-level, college-pathway teams (17/18 and 15/16). Athletes on a Nike roster commit to being present at all qualifiers.
  • Black Regional — a real college-recruiting track with one qualifier and far less travel (17/18 and 15/16).
  • White Local — strong competition close to home with the lightest travel load (single-age 18, 17, 16, and 15).

With up to four teams per age group — and the ability to field additional local teams when enough athletes come out — there’s a fit for everyone. So don’t count yourself out: the more players who try out, the more teams we can build. For the full breakdown of each level, see our 2026–27 high school team structure.

How High School Team Selection Works

When you register online, you’ll get a short pre-tryout questionnaire by email asking one key question:

🔍 Do you want to be considered for a Nike National team?

We ask because the Nike program involves a higher level of travel, commitment, and financial investment. You know what’s best for your student-athlete and your schedule, and we respect that. Your answer is flagged for our coaches at tryouts.

What Happens at Tryouts on July 24

  • Nike National rosters are evaluated and announced. If your athlete is in the Nike pool, you’ll have your answer that day.
  • Black Regional and White Local athletes are evaluated too — but those teams may be finalized through the fall development window, not necessarily that day.
  • The door stays open. If your athlete levels up dramatically during the school season, she can absolutely move into a higher-tier team. 💪

Frequently Asked Questions

When will we know if my daughter made the Nike National team?

This year, Nike National rosters are selected and announced right at the July 24 tryouts — not in November, like past seasons. That’s earlier clarity for your family.

Are Black Regional and White Local teams set at tryouts too?

Not necessarily. Only Nike National rosters are finalized at tryouts. Black Regional and White Local teams may be set through a fall development window, so athletes have time to grow during the school season. Players can move up.

When are NSSC tryouts?

High school (15U–18U) tryouts are Friday, July 24, 2026 starting at 5 PM. Youth (10U–14U) tryouts are Saturday, October 24, 2026. Both are at The Sportsplex in Cape Girardeau, MO. HS Registration opens June 22.

How much do tryouts cost?

Tryout registration is a $25.00 non-refundable fee for the 2026–27 season.

One Final Thought

We don’t believe a two-hour window defines your athlete’s future. We believe in earned excellence — and in walking beside your family through the full journey, not just a tryout.

No matter which team your athlete lands on, we’re here to coach, support, and develop her every step of the way. There’s a place for her to grow, compete, and rise.

We can’t wait to see you at tryouts!
